    Assistant Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian (at the rank of Administrative Assistant II) in the University Libraries (Ref: 536777)
    The University of Hong Kong Libraries Collection Services is responsible for providing quality services related to resources and access in support of learning, teaching and research. Collection Services includes Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Collection Management and Collection Development of all library general collections, in both physical and electronic formats.
    The Role
    Reporting to the Head of Collection Services, the appointee will assist in overseeing the section’s day-to-day operations, developing and refining workflows and best practices for metadata production, record management and physical processing. Key responsibilities include:
    • perform both manual and AI-augmented metadata production for print, special collections and electronic resources adhering to relevant metadata schemas/standards;
    • perform large-scale metadata management and record management;
    • carry out authority work (LC authorities, HkCAN and Wikidata), including record creation, enhancement and quality checking;
    • develop, document and continuously improve team workflows, metadata management procedures and physical processing practices in line with current trends;
    • supervise, coach and train library assistants in metadata production skills and quality standards; and
    • collaborate with different library teams to support user-oriented discovery services.
    Qualifications and Qualities
    Applicants should possess a Master’s degree or above in Library and Information Science (or a related discipline), with at least 4 years of relevant post-qualification experience, including supervisory and management experience in academic libraries. They should be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua), with strong communication and interpersonal skills, and sound analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    Candidates should have in-depth knowledge and strong technical skills in cataloguing and metadata management, including:
    • original and copy/adaptive cataloguing of Western and CJK materials in all formats, adhering to relevant metadata schemas/standards;
    • experience with OCLC Connexion Client and WorldShare Record Manager;
    • solid authority control experience, including creation, enhancement and quality checking of authority records (e.g., LC authorities, HkCAN and Wikidata);
    • proficiency in romanization/transliteration for CJK materials;
    • proficiency in Alma and familiarity with PrimoVE;
    • knowledge of AI-augmented metadata production and ontologies of linked open data (LOD), BIBFRAME and schema.org; and
    • experience in cataloguing rare items and special collections will be an advantage.

    What we offer
    The appointment will be made on a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
