    Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant I

    Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine

    (to commence as soon as possible on one year contract or a two-years fixed-term contract basis, the contract duration to be confirmed after the interview, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability)

    Applications are invited for a Senior Research Assistant/ Research Assistant I to support active research programmes in surgical outcomes, perioperative medicine, and clinical data science within the Department of Surgery, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. The appointee will work under the division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation and collaborate within a multidisciplinary academic surgical team.

    Duties

    The appointee will be responsible for the following:

    • Manage and analyse large-scale clinical and administrative datasets, including electronic health records and surgical registry data
    • Apply statistical modelling (including multivariable regression, survival analysis, propensity score methods, and mixed-effects models) to clinical research questions
    • Develop and implement machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for outcome prediction, risk stratification, and natural language processing of clinical text
    • Conduct systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses in support of ongoing grant-funded projects
    • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts, conference presentations, grant proposals, and ethics submissions
    • Maintain research databases and ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

    Qualifications

    Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree or above in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. A Master's degree or research experience in a clinical or health data environment would be an advantage. The following competencies are essential:

    • Proficiency in at least two of the following: R, Python, Stata, or SAS, with demonstrated experience in applied statistical analysis
    • Working knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow) and experience with AI-driven data processing is highly desirable
    • Experience in handling large and complex datasets, including data cleaning, linkage, and governance
    • Familiarity with survival analysis, longitudinal data methods, or causal inference methods would be a distinct advantage
    • Good command of written and spoken English; proficiency in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin) is preferred
    • Strong analytical, organisational, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team

    Remuneration

    A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will be on one year contract or a two-years fixed-term contract basis, with the contract duration to be confirmed. Where applicable, the appointee may attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of on a two-year fixed-term basis, subject to the terms of appointment.
