    Job Description:

Applications are invited for the appointment of a Post-doctoral Fellow (several posts) in the Department of Chemistry (Ref. 536698), to participate in a cutting-edge research programme on “Smart Power Systems for Autonomous Platforms,” focusing on next-generation technologies, including drones, robotics, and self-driven laboratories.

The appointees will engage in research on the development of intelligent hybrid power architectures to support autonomous operation in chemical and materials synthesis environments, including the implementation of smart synthesis workflows using robotic hands and manipulators. The role will involve contributions to the design, integration, and control of power systems for safe, adaptive, and resilient autonomous research platforms.

    Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline, and a doctoral degree in Power System Design and Development or a relevant field. They should demonstrate a strong track record of research and expertise in electric power system engineering, particularly in smart power hybridisation.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in multidisciplinary research, especially in areas involving autonomous or robotic systems. Applicants should also show evidence of a strong publication record and excellent scientific communication skills.

    Responsibilities:

    • Design and develop advanced electric power system architectures for autonomous platforms and laboratory systems.
    • Lead research in smart electric power hybridisation (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors, fuel-based systems, renewable integration).
    • Develop control and energy management strategies for self-driven power systems.
    • Support implementation of autonomous chemical and materials synthesis operations, including robotic-hand-enabled synthesis tasks.
    • Build and validate simulation and experimental prototypes for drones, robotic systems, and autonomous laboratory infrastructure.
    • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams (electrical engineering, robotics, control, AI, chemistry, materials science, and mechanical engineering).
    • Publish high-impact research outcomes and contribute to project reports and grant activities.

    Desirable Skills:

    • Experience with embedded power electronics and real-time control systems.
    • Hands-on experience with UAV/drone, robotic, or autonomous platform power systems.
    • Exposure to autonomous laboratories, especially for chemical/materials synthesis.
    • Experience integrating power systems with robotic manipulators/hands for smart laboratory operations.
    • Proficiency in modelling/simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, or similar).
    • Experience in prototype development, testing, and system validation.

    What We Offer:

    • Opportunity to work on frontier technologies in autonomous energy and laboratory automation.
    • Access to advanced facilities for robotics, autonomous synthesis, and power system prototyping.
    • Strong multidisciplinary collaboration environment and career development support.
    • The appointment will commence as soon as possible for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
    • A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

    Application Requirements:

The University only accepts online applications for the above posts. Applicants should apply online with the following:

    • Cover letter outlining your suitability for the role
    • Full Curriculum vitae (including publications)
    • Brief research statement (maximum of 2 pages)
    • Contact details of 2–3 referees

Enquiries about the post should be sent to Professor Z.X. Guo at [email protected].

    Application

The University only accepts online applications for the above posts. Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until July 24, 2026, or until the posts are filled, whichever is earlier.
