Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

An opportunity has arisen at the University of Auckland for a Research Ethics Advisor in the Ethics & Integrity Team to support two human participant ethics committees as well as researchers in preparing and submitting their ethics applications. A primary focus of this role is to provide timely, accurate advice to applicants, either directly from queries, or as part of outreach and training, to meet the aim of raising the first time approval rates of ethics applications.

In this role, you will be responsible for building strong work relationships with faculty, the Committee Chairs and Committee members, and with external agencies (such as Health and Disability Ethics Committees (HDECs) and the Health Research Council Ethics Committee (HRCEC) to ensure there is a high level of support and advice from the Ethics team.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, on a permanent contract. The salary range for this role is $68,600 - $84,700 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

You will have a talent for working in an environment where regulatory compliance is key to success – with the ability to bring others on the journey with you. You will need to demonstrate strong advisory skills, and the ability to help others navigate the ethics application process.

You should possess:

  • the ability to think logically, and advise in situations of ethical ambiguity
  • demonstrate strong decision-making expertise and judgment
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • the ability to multitask in a high volume, deadline-driven environmental background and tertiary qualification in law, bioethics, or a relevant discipline
